- Slashing: Occurs when a player swings their stick at an opponent with intent to harm.
- High-sticking: Occurs when a player’s stick makes contact with an opponent’s head or face.
- Boarding: Occurs when a player checks an opponent into the boards from behind or with excessive force.
- Interference: Occurs when a player interferes with an opponent who does not have possession of the puck or is not in the immediate vicinity of the play.
- Charging: Occurs when a player takes more than three strides or leaves their feet to deliver a hit.
- Roughing: Occurs when a player engages in unsportsmanlike conduct, such as pushing, shoving, or punching an opponent.
- Cross-checking: Occurs when a player hits an opponent with their stick while holding it with both hands.
- Elbowing: Occurs when a player hits an opponent with their elbow.
- Delay of game: Occurs when a player intentionally delays the game, such as by shooting the puck out of play or knocking the net off its moorings.
- Too many men on the ice: Occurs when a team has more than the allowable number of players on the ice.
Penalties can result in a player being sent to the penalty box for a designated amount of time, depending on the severity of the infraction. The opposing team is given a power play during this time, meaning they have more players on the ice than the penalized team.
